Roland JX3P Synthesizer

Roland JX-3P

The Roland  JX-3P is a six-note polyphonic, 61 key synthesizer manufactured from 1983-85 which featured an on-board 128-step sequencer. A slightly modified rack-mount version called the MKS-30 was also available.  It has 32 factory programs in ROM, and storage for user memory for 32 programs.

The JX-3P was originally aimed more towards players who wanted the convenience of instant preset synth sounds and as a result the user interface is notable for it's distinct lack of knobs and sliders compared to it's predecessors and it's sister Juno series synths. It is possible to program sounds from the JX-3P's panel but this can be tedious so Roland also developed the optional PG200 Controller with gave instant access to all of the synths editing potential. When paired with the PG200 the true power of the JX-3P can really be unleashed. Unlike the Juno series which only had one digitally controlled oscillators (DCO) per voice, the JX3P features 2 DCO's per voice, with detuning and several cross-modulation modes and allows the pitch of either oscillator to be controlled by its envelope generator. Add to this the Roland IR3109 low-pass filter, a discrete VCA, and an on-board stereo chorus effect, the JX-3P has the capability of creating some lush, classic analog sounds which lets this this vintage synth punch far higher than it's original position within the Roland synth hierarchy.

The JX-3P was Roland's first MIDI equipped synth although the MIDI implementation is basic, supporting only note on/off, pitch bend, hold, modulation and program change messages and misses out on later MIDI implementations like System Exclusive" nor "Continuous Controllers" (CC). Although external patch storage or real-time parameter updates are not possible through MIDI, the User preset patches and sequencer patterns can be stored on an external device via the Tape memory outputs.

The JX-3P's built-in 128-step polyphonic sequencer can be synchronised to external devices, such as drum machines, connected to its simple clock pulse input jack, although MIDI clock synchronisation is not supported.

Over the years the JX-3P has achieved a certain cult status and can can The Future Sound of London, Astral Projection, Vince Clarke, Orbital, Luke Vibert, Stevie Nicks, and Thomas Dolby amongst its users.

If you can't find or afford an original JX-3P then despair not. Roland has given the vintage synth a new lease of life as part of their Boutique range in the form of the JX-03.
